University of California at Santa Barbara
February 5-6, 2005

The Gevirtz Graduate School of Education and the Writing Program at the
University of California, Santa Barbara invite proposals for their
interdisciplinary conference, "Writing Research in the Making," to be held
February 5-6, 2005 in Santa Barbara, California.

This conference calls attention to the critical importance of writing research in developing the knowledge we need to meet educational challenges. The conference honors the full range of writing research experience, from seasoned experts to researchers-in-training, and will serve as a forum to discuss issues of methodology, access, funding, design, responsibility, training, and results. Also, the conference hopes to make research processes more visible by serving as a bridge among disciplinary approaches, and by encouraging interdisciplinary exchanges and connections.

Everyone involved with writing does research, whether formally or informally. Teachers, writing program administrators, writing center directors, teachers-in-training, graduate students, experienced writing researchers, and other scholars observe people writing in different contexts. They also note patterns, evaluate what works and what does not, reflect on their own practices, examine the role of writing around them, and apply what they learn to improve the practice and teaching of writing. Such research processes do not always come easy, for they take time, thought, and resources--and they especially depend on opportunities for exchanging ideas with others.

We invite proposals for panels, roundtables, and individual presentations that discuss works in progress, completed research, and reflections on how writing research is conceived, proposed, funded, carried out, published, and responded to.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

* Problems faced in trying to do research.

* Writing research focused on K-12 education, higher education, and adult
education including issues of language diversity.

* Historical and contemporary research on writing in business, science,
communication, media, the arts, and the public sphere.

* Research on the effects of the Internet and other electronic resources on
writing, and on different stages of research; how these resources become the
focus of research (such as ETS Criterion®).

* Accounts of issues raised by specific methodologies; challenges and benefits of interdisciplinary research and/or inter-institutional research.

* Presentations on how to apply for research funding and how to write up
research for conferences and for publication.

Abstracts of 250 words should be sent by October 1st to writing@education.ucsb.edu or to the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education, UC Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA 93106-9490 c/o Sarah Boggs.
